A comparative study of the total serum immunoglobulin E level among Lithuanian children with toxocariasis and atopic diseases Regina Emuzyte, Regina Firantiene, Nijole Suliokiene, Aurelija Dautartiene, Regina Virbaliene
Changes of the total IgE level were investigated in 161 serum. Children were divided into three groups. The first group comprised 83 patients with atopic diseases: the second group comprised 32 patients with toxocariasis; control group comprised 46 children; healthy and suffering from frequent viral infections, but free of allergic disease and toxocariasis symptoms. Toxocara seroprevalence value (positive ELISA tests ³0,38 ODU) was 12 perc. in children with atopic diseases and with an increased serum total IgE level (³100 IU/ml). Our results showed that the serum total IgE level, was higher in patients with toxocariasis (1045±172 IU/ml) than in children with atopic diseases (427±32 IU/ml; p<0,001). Among the group of children with toxocariasis, the serum total IgE level was also higher in those aged above 12 years (1646±336 IU/ml) than in younger ones (634±129 IU/ml; p<0,001). We concluded that investigations for toxocariasis are necessary in children with atopic disease symptoms, especially in the cases when serum total IgE level is above 1000 IU/ml. We sugested that atopic diseases rather may be alternative to Toxocara infection than concomitant diseases.
