The study analyzed clinical efficacy of Asthma education intervention in children and parents, designed to produce acceptable asthma knowledge and treatment improvement. Various epidemiological studies were established to assess value of clinical asthma guidelines in childhood and adulthood, but we’re still lacking reviews of data from those projects. Our study assessed effectiveness of educational interventions 12 months after attending Asthma school. The project endorsed by ERS Educational Grant was launched in 2004, finished in 2006, but Asthma School continued working. Three hundred and two asthmatics (aged 5–18 yers), recruited during hospital treatment of an acute asthma exacerbation, and their parents completed the study. Intervention group of 231 asthmatics received full Asthma School Program. Control group enrolled 71 asthmatics receiving usual instructions for asthma treatment and management. Clinical and educational outcome were investigated immediately after Asthma School and 12 months later. Both groups underwent follow-ups with clinical exam, lung function tests during consecutive 12 months after included into the study. Concluding, significant differences were found in the intervention group in asthma morbidity, hospitalization rate, asthma knowledge, compliance, inhaler technique and lung function tests. No change was found in attitude and behavior regarding asthma prognosis in adolescent patients and parents.
